In the Ecuador capital city, Quito, there is a big difference between public and private healthcare. The Medical Volunteer Opportunities Quito Ecuador offer placements in two public hospitals, one in Quito and one in the Los Chillos Valley (on the outskirts of Quito, Ecuador). Previous governments reduced public funding for medical services. Families, unable to afford health care on their own, are routinely forced to forego necessary medical treatment. In addition, families in transition (those moving from what was once sustainable farmland to a dependency on urban employment) have undergone a change in diet. Traditional foods have been replaced by commercialised fast food and junk food, which has led to additional health problems including an increase in obesity and diabetes. Lack of access to health care and malnutrition coupled with other health care concerns such as hepatitis A, typhoid fever and dengue certainly add to the immediacy of the situation. Volunteers can certainly bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the situation, and, in return, benefit from their direct experience working with the neediest.
The placement in Quito is at the paediatric hospital that provides specialised health care for children from birth to 14 years of age. This is one of the main public hospitals in Ecuador and many of the children who receive care at this location come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. All forms of care are needed; from providing for basic care such as changing and feeding the children to entertaining them with reading, colouring, and game playing. This placement allows you to be creative. You are welcome to bring materials and create your own program for the children. Medical Volunteer Opportunities Quito Ecuador
The placement in the Los Chillos Valley is at a hospital that provides general attention for children and adults; the focus is on providing necessary vaccinations for children and gynaecological services for women. Volunteers are able to assist the medical staff as they attend to emergency cases.
Depending on your Spanish skills and medical knowledge, it is possible for you to shadow a doctor in a hospital / clinic setting, intensive care unit, emergency room, at their office helping with administrative tasks, etc. The exact duties may change from day to day depending upon the hospital’s needs. Medical volunteer opportunities abroad also gives some volunteers the opportunity to accompany the doctors to visit rural areas or rural medical centres.
